The battle at ‘Bealach Leachta’ was between the Brian Boru and Miles MacBrain, chief of the O,Mahoneys and King of Cadbery. The battle was for Brain Boru to avenge his brothers death and accede to the throne of King of Munster. The ferocity of the battle was seen throughout the the day with battle lines from the fording point of the Sullane ‘Ath an Tuargain’ (The Ford of Conflict) and the final rout of the battle seen at ‘Bearna Dearg’ (The Bloody Gap). The significance of the victory for Boru was it represented the first major defeat of the Danes in Ireland.
