Macroom Castle from 12th century was built by the O’Flynn family which reigned over the Muskerry region at the time. The castle provided a focal point for all development at Macroom as it was seen as the capital of Muskerry. It was sited overlooking the Sullane river and faced in westward direction protecting it from invasion with high imposing walls.
